Scholarships: We believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the growth, confidence, and joy of outdoor adventure. Thanks to the generosity of our community members, we have sliding-scale scholarships available based on individual need and program costs, helping keep our programs accessible to all.

Program Overview:

Expedition Academy is a comprehensive, year-long program created by Adventure Ready NW for qualified students who are ready to grow in independence—both in the outdoors and in everyday life. With seasonal terms and breaks built in, this immersive curriculum combines practical life skill development with adventure-based learning and community connection.

Over the course of the year, students will:

  • Build self-awareness and independence in everyday life skills

  • Learn and apply healthy habits related to food, fitness, technology, and time management

  • Practice adaptive first aid and CPR

  • Gain tools for working through their challenge zones

  • Plan, prepare for, and complete a summer capstone adventure project

  • Receive mentorship and support through each stage of growth

What a Day at Expedition Academy Looks Like:

We begin our day at the Gladstone 24 Hour Fitness with group workouts, followed by showers and getting ready for the day. From there, we head to lunch where we practice trying new foods, placing orders, and work on fitness planning and goal setting. After lunch, we head to the local library for guided lessons and activities focused on that week’s topic.

Fall Term:

In our Fall Term, we’ll focus on developing healthy habits—including food, fitness, technology use, and time management—as well as deepening self-awareness and building independence in daily living skills. This term sets the foundation for growth in the months to come.

RECREATION: Biking 102: Skills & Confidence

Ready to take your riding to the next level? This 4-week series is designed for riders who want to build confidence, sharpen their skills, and feel more comfortable on two wheels. Whether you're new to group rides or just need a refresher (and let’s be honest—everyone does sometimes!), this class is for you. Each week, we’ll focus on a mix of essential skills: safe group riding, shifting techniques, riding with more ease and control, and basic bike maintenance to keep your ride in top shape. Expect a supportive, relaxed environment where you can ask questions, try new things, and enjoy the ride—literally. Let’s get rolling together!

RECREATION: Mountain Biking 101

Ready to hit the dirt? Mountain Biking 101 is a single-day recreation program designed to introduce you to the basics of off-road riding. Perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a refresher, we’ll cover trail safety, body position, braking, shifting, and navigating uneven terrain. Come build your confidence, learn new skills, and have fun on the trail! Keep an eye out for Mountain Biking 102 later this fall—we’ll keep building skills and head out to ride some rad trails together!

RECREATION: Mountain Biking 102: Shred Sandy Ridge

Take your riding to the next level with Mountain Biking 102! We’re headed to Sandy Ridge, one of Oregon’s premier mountain biking trail systems, for a day of skill-building and fun on the dirt. This session is all about improving technique and gaining confidence on more advanced trails. We’ll focus on cornering, riding position, and flow, with plenty of time to practice and shred together in a supportive, stoke-filled environment. Whether you joined us for Mountain Biking 101 or have some trail experience already, this ride is for anyone ready to level up and have a blast doing it!

Kick off the season strong with our Fall Conditioning class at 24 Hour Fitness in Tualatin! This well-rounded program is a great way to stay active, build strength, and boost your fitness heading into the cooler months. RECREATION: Climbing with Friends

Elevate your climbing game and connect with fellow enthusiasts in our Community Climb class! This course focuses on refining techniques, tackling challenging problems, and fostering a vibrant climbing community. This term, we’re spending all 6 weeks at The Circuit to allow for more focused time on building skills, practicing advanced techniques, and growing confidence on the wall. Participants will dive into dynamic moves, complex sequences, and receive personalized tips to elevate their performance. ARNW invites other experienced climbers to come—creating a collaborative, social atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to push their limits, share experiences, and grow together. RECREATION: Hiking 101

Explore the beauty of the Pacific Northwest one step at a time! Join us for a 4-week hiking series at Tryon Creek State Natural Area. Each week, we’ll hit the trails together, building strength, confidence, and connection along the way. This series is perfect for anyone looking to stay active, spend time in nature, and enjoy the changing seasons under the trees. We’ll focus on trail awareness, pacing, gear tips, and building community—whether you're a beginner or a returning hiker. Expect a mix of movement, conversation, and time to pause and enjoy the forest around us. Let’s lace up our boots and hit the trail—rain or shine!

RECREATION: Fall 5K Running Group: Train & Race Together.

Ready to pick up the pace? Join our fall 5K running group as we focus on building speed, setting personal goals, and running with purpose. Whether you're looking to improve your time, stay motivated with a supportive crew, or simply enjoy the rhythm of fall running, this group is for you. Over the term, we’ll train together with guided runs, speed drills, and weekly check-ins to help you track your progress and stay on course. Our season will finish strong with an optional community race—the Ho Ho Ho 5K with X Dog Events on Sunday, December 7th at Cook Park in Tigard. Note: Registration for the Ho Ho Ho 5K is not included. You can register here.  Let’s run, train, and celebrate the season together!

THRIVING ADVENTURE: Columbia River Gorge Bike Adventure

Experience the thrill of riding along one of the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic landscapes! This scenic bike adventure takes us along the historic bike path through the Columbia River Gorge, winding past waterfalls, lush forests, and sweeping views of the river below. Our ride will lead us to the charming town of Cascade Locks, offering a perfect mix of adventure, community, and connection with nature.

THRIVING ADVENTURE: Fall Family Hike

Grab your lunch, lace up your hiking shoes, and bring your sense of adventure! We'll spend a beautiful fall day exploring trails near Mt. Hood or in the Columbia River Gorge—both offering stunning views, crisp mountain air, and vibrant autumn colors. We'll meet at 11 AM and wrap up around 3 PM. Expect a moderate hike, plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, and a chance to share lunch in the great outdoors. The exact trail location will be shared closer to the date.

THRIVING ADVENTURE: Climbing & Lunch

Join us for an active and fun-filled day at the Portland Rock Gym in Beaverton! We'll spend the morning climbing—whether you're new to the wall or an experienced climber, there's something for everyone. PRG offers a supportive and exciting indoor climbing experience with routes for all levels. After we've worked up an appetite, we’ll head over to Si Señor Family Mexican Restaurant for a delicious lunch and time to relax together. Come for the challenge, stay for the good food and great company!

THRIVING ADVENTURE: Timberline Lodge & Pacific Crest Trail Hike

Spend a crisp fall day exploring the historic Timberline Lodge and hiking a scenic stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail. Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Hood, Timberline offers rich history, stunning alpine views, and cozy lodge vibes. After exploring the lodge, we’ll head out on the PCT for a breathtaking hike through high mountain meadows, volcanic landscapes, and golden fall foliage. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, connection, and mountain air.

THRIVING ADVENTURE: Eagle Creek Hike & Bonneville Fish Hatchery Exploration

Join us for a day of adventure in the Columbia River Gorge! We'll start with a scenic hike along the Eagle Creek Trail, known for its lush forests, mossy cliffs, and stunning waterfalls. After our hike, we’ll head over to the Bonneville Fish Hatchery to explore the grounds, feed the rainbow trout, and get an up-close look at Herman the Sturgeon. Join us for a cozy evening out at Bridgeport Village! We'll kick off the night with a movie together, then head to one of the village’s many great restaurants to enjoy a delicious dinner. With so many exciting films coming out this winter, we’re sure to find a great one to enjoy. Whether you're here for the food, the film, or the fun company, it’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy a festive night out. Movie choice and dinner location will be announced closer to the event.

We'll explore the pumpkin patch, wander through the corn maze, enjoy seasonal treats, and soak up all the sights and sounds of fall. After our time at the festival, we’ll head to a cozy local spot for a relaxed group dinner. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a crisp autumn day with friends, laughter, and a little adventure.

THRIVING ADVENTURE: A Day of Christmas Fun

Celebrate the magic of the season with us! While we're still waiting on ticket release details in September, we're planning a festive day filled with holiday cheer. Possible adventures include a ride on the Holiday Train at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, the Polar Express on the Mt. Hood Railroad, or a visit to the Silverton Christmas Market. No matter where we end up, you can count on a joyful, memory-making day. We’ll share final details as soon as tickets become available—so stay tuned!

Basecamp Programs

 
BASECAMP: Bike Maintenance & Dinner

Thurs. 11/20, 3-7 pm

After a few great terms of riding, it's time to give our bikes some love! Join us as we clean, tune up, and prep our bikes for winter storage. Adventure Ready NW will provide all the tools, cleaning supplies, and guidance you need. We’ll fully wash, grease, and tune up our bikes so they're ready to rest until spring. Once the work is done, we’ll celebrate our efforts with dinner together!

CAMPS

 
Wilderness First Aid and CPR

Friday, October 17th – Sunday, October 19th 2025

Location: LL Stub Stewart State Park

Whether you're hiking, biking, paddling, or camping far from civilization, the unexpected can happen. This Wilderness First Aid course follows the full American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) curriculum and is designed specifically for outdoor adventurers who want to be prepared to handle medical emergencies in remote settings.

Through hands-on practice, scenario-based learning, and interactive instruction, you’ll learn to:

  • Assess and respond to common wilderness injuries and illnesses

  • Manage shock, fractures, sprains, burns, bites, and environmental emergencies

  • Make evacuation decisions and use improvised first aid tools

  • Communicate effectively with rescue personnel

  • Prioritize care when help is delayed and resources are limited

This course goes beyond basic first aid by emphasizing extended care, creative problem-solving, and realistic backcountry scenarios. It's perfect for backpackers, climbers, educators, guides, trail runners, or anyone who ventures into the wild.

Please note: This course uses the standard ASHI curriculum and is not adapted. For those needing a more accessible learning environment, check out our Spring Adapted First Aid & CPR class, designed for varied learning styles and support needs.

  • Two-year ASHI Wilderness First Aid certification

  • All course materials and hands-on practice equipment

No previous medical training is required—just bring your curiosity and a commitment to safety in the outdoors.

Location & Weekend Experience

This immersive weekend takes place at LL Stub Stewart State Park, just a short drive from Portland and surrounded by beautiful forested trails—an ideal setting to learn and practice wilderness medicine.

We’ve reserved the Mountain Dale Meeting Hall for indoor instruction, with plenty of outdoor space for hands-on scenarios.

Stay for the weekend!Book a campsite or yurt in the park and enjoy the full BASECAMP experience. We’ll host a casual Saturday night potluck—a great chance to relax, share stories, and connect with fellow adventurers around the fire.

Please note:

  • Camping and meals are on your own

  • Registration includes class sessions and certification. 

Come for the skills. Stay for the weekend. Leave with the confidence to care for yourself and others in the wild.

CAMP: Winter Family Adventure Camp

Dates: Friday, December 19th – Sunday, December 21st
Location: Camp Kiwanis, Mt. Hood

Embrace the magic of the season with our Winter Family Adventure Camp at Camp Kiwanis on Mt. Hood! This special weekend is all about spending meaningful time together—playing in the snow, creating cozy memories, and enjoying the beauty of winter as a family.

What to Expect:

  • Cozy Lodge Stays – Settle into our charming mountain lodge, the perfect home base for snowy adventures and relaxing downtime.

  • Snowshoeing Adventures – Explore Mt. Hood’s winter trails on guided snowshoe outings, perfect for all experience levels.

  • Festive Fun – Gather for a heartwarming Christmas movie night with cozy blankets and hot cocoa. We will also be going out into the National Forest to cut down a Christmas tree!

  • Creative Winter Activities – Get hands-on with gingerbread house decorating and winter-themed art projects—fun for all ages!

This camp is open to families of all kinds—siblings, parents, and loved ones are all encouraged to join in the fun. Whether you're new to winter adventures or already love the snow, we'll provide the space, gear, and support to make it a joyful, memorable weekend.

If your family can’t make it, no problem—you’re still welcome to sign up solo as a participant and have an amazing time!
